Taking A Stand Against Girl Scouts of the Day: An Indiana state House rep has caused a stir for refusing to sign a resolution honoring the Girl Scouts on the occasion of the youth organization’s 100th anniversary.
In a letter to his colleagues, Rep. Bob Morris (R-Fort Wayne) urged the House to rethink its endorsement of a group he says promotes abortion, homosexuality, and the sexualization of young girls.
Rep. Morris claims that “evidence” he found online led him to conclude that the Girl Scouts “is quickly becoming a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood,” and warns of “liberal progressive troop-leaders” who will “indoctrinate the girls in their troop according to the principles of Planned Parenthood.”
He goes on to excoriate the Girl Scouts for promoting “homosexual lifestyles” and allowing “‘transgender’ or cross-dressing” boys to join troops “just like any real girl.”
Finally, he takes issue with an alleged list of Girl Scout role models, which he claims are mostly “feminists, lesbians, or Communists,” excepting three with “a briefly-mentioned religious background.”
Morris closes by saying that in light of what he’s learned, and the fact that First Lady Michelle Obama is the Honorary President of Girl Scouts of America, he will be pulling his two daughters out of the local Girl Scouts troop, and signing them up for Little Flowers, the American Heritage Girls’ “traditional” alternative, where “they will learn about values and principles that will not confuse their conservative Hoosier upbringing.”
Morris is the only member of the Indiana state House who hasn’t signed the nonbinding Girl Scouts centennial resolution, but several other House Republicans will reportedly be taking their signatures back.
For its part, Girl Scouts of the USA has released statement denying the lawmaker’s allegations, particularly those concerning pamphlets supposedly distributed to troopers that say “there is no right or wrong way to have sex.”
A spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana said GSUSA is aware of websites devoted to “exposing” the organization, but they have not impacted membership or cookie sales.
